Here are my precious kittens showing me the new trick they have learned. Yes, they now know how to climb up a fully inclined drafting table. Ronin actually made it all the way to the top, because he’s bigger and can stretch farther. Before long, I suspect to find the two of the duking it out on the top edge of my art table.

At this point, it’s safe to say that nothing is safe in the house. If they haven’t been on top of it, it’s only because they haven’t thought about doing it yet. It all starts with Myu wanting to get away from Ronin when they are chasing each other around. She’s slower and smaller than he is, but she’s got far better agility and balance, and she is very creative in finding new places to get into. Then she teaches her wild and crazy brother about it, and he runs with the idea and expands on it. He learned how to get on the stool by watching her, and then he decided climbing the drafting table looked like a good idea.
There’s no stopping them either. They are fearless, and none of the usual methods of controlling cat behavior have worked. They laughed at the spray bottle of water. They sneered at the cans with pennies in it. Sticky tape doesn’t even give them a moment’s pause. They just keep doing whatever it is they are doing. My only option is to decide whether or not what they are doing is something I can tolerate, and if not, remove them from the area and distract them with toys. As you can imagine, this is not only time consuming, it also doesn’t work all that well.
It’s a good thing they are super adorable, terribly sweet, and I love them so much. If these things weren’t true, I might regret having gotten two of the little beasts. Even though they are seriously into the exploratory stage of kitten-hood and are being beyond annoying, they have brought so much love and joy into the house, it’s totally worth it all.
Still … my art table! Argh! Is nothing sacred?!
Nope. The cats own it all.
With one cat, we were still able to maintain at least the appearance that we owned the house. With two, it’s a foregone conclusion that we no longer own our home, the cats do.
Though we still maintain control of the bedroom, but only if we are quick enough when opening and closing the door to keep The Terrible Two out. Eventually we will have to relent and they’ll claim that room too.
But they are adorable, so I guess it’s OK to be a slave in my own home devoted to making sure the beasties are happy. :D
