Good Kitties

Attack ModeFirst night and morning with the kitties went well. I didn’t hear a peep out of them until I got up this morning. Then Black started crying, so I let them out of the box. They found the food and the litter box all by themselves (I showed them where they were last night). I’m so proud. I do have to say this: After three years of Fuzza having a hiding spot that I never could find, it only took them a grand total of five minutes of freedom to lead me right to it … behind the DVDs in the TV stand. Uh huh. I can hear Fuzza laughing at me for never having figured that one out. In the next five minutes of freedom, they showed me the places that needed to be blocked off to keep them from getting into locations I can’t reach without moving heavy furniture. Now that is done, I’m letting them run free in the main house, and they seem to be doing well. I’ve determined that when I can hear them, all is well. When I can’t hear them, that’s when there’s some unauthorized cat activity going on. I’m thinking they need collars with bells.

Kittens have only two modes: Sleep Mode and Attack Mode. Attack Mode can be seen in the photo above (click pic for larger view). It’s like an off and on switch, and it’s so funny to watch them tearing around after each other and then falling over into a brief nap … and then tearing around after each other again. At least since we have two, Attack Mode is focused on each other rather than our ankles, feet and hands. Not that either of them has shown any playful aggression against either of us. Grey likes to lick fingers and when he does nibble, he doesn’t put much effort into it. Black is super gentle and not much of a rough-houser … though she is a serious crybaby. Yeah, for the moment, I am calling them Grey and Black. They haven’t told me what they want to be named yet. Yin and Yang come to mind though, simply because of their opposite but complimentary personalities. We’ll see. Cat naming is a delicate art and can take months in our household. Fuzza went through three names before he decided he liked one of them.

Cat Lady called last night … while we were coming home with the kittens, ironically. I’m not going to call her back, because I don’t think I can keep my composure while actually speaking to her. I’m still pretty angry. I’ll drop her an email later, and all I am going to say is “Sorry, but we have kittens now. I’m sure you’ll find perfect homes for Quid and Murry.” Or maybe I’ll just blow her off entirely. Not like me to do that, but I seriously don’t want anymore contact with this woman. I’m sure she thinks she’s doing a grand service for the cats in her care, but when it takes her years to find homes for these creatures, one has to think she might be going about it incorrectly.

Well, the kittens have had all morning to play in peace (been going at it about two hours straight), and now they are going to have to learn what it’s like when Mommy does housework. I’ll probably have to put them in the big box for a while just to keep them from freaking out or getting under foot. Then I’m going to make them some new toys and play with them until they go back to sleep. That’s when they’ll learn about about napping with a human on the couch.

Oh, and cutest thing ever? Watching them groom each other.

Yin and Yang seem like good names if their personalities are opposites. I guess it will take some time to know what their personalities will really be like, though.

I am so happy about these cats (and I don’t even like cats). Great news, you got them home. I think they actually look better than the other two — maybe older perhaps.

It is a great joy to watch new critters, new to you, new the planet, there is so much to learn and so much fun to have, so much air to breathe. We are better humans because of our pets. Cheers

I like these two better too. These were the kittens we were supposed to have. They are melding into the household really well and not causing TOO much trouble. They are actually younger than the other two. If we hadn’t been getting two, I wouldn’t have wanted one that was just weaned, but with two they can socialize together and learn to be cats … something Fuzza didn’t have a chance to do since we had to bottle feed him occassionally when we first found him. He was REALLY to young.

They are so fun to watch. This weekend we are going to get a scratching post and a few new toys. And so the spoiling begins.
