Orb Says …

Here are some answers I’d like to give at Ask Metafilter but realize they are entirely too snarky, so I won’t. Instead, I’ll post them here where I can get as snarky and bitchy as I’d like. This will probably be a regular feature around here, as I have discovered there are at least a few questions every week that make me want to throttle someone.

If someone who smokes in their apartment where they reside with their two cats knocked on my door and complained that an air freshener that I may or may not have put in the communal stairwell was a danger to their cats, I would laugh them off my door-stoop and shut the door. Additionally, automatic air fresheners don’t build up combustible gases in the area they are placed in and they are only harmful to pets and humans if they are ingested. If they created massive quantities of combustible gases and were harmful to humans and pets during normal operations, there would be houses all over the world blowing up and pets dying left and right … and we’d be hearing about it somewhere. Get a life, get educated, and realize that your stale cigarette smoke smells far more foul than any air freshener could ever hope to.

Seeing as I live in a house with an engineer and “electronics” guy, I asked him how he would react if someone he worked with used the word “electronical” when describing something at work. He screwed up his face, laughed for a moment, and then went on a rant about how it would make him think the person he was dealing with was an idiot and unprofessional … and then he’d either correct him or laugh at him behind his back, depending how how well he knew the guy and whether he liked him or not. He also said engineers should keep in mind that often technicians are better educated and have more experience in the field of electronics than the engineers they work with, so you should keep that in mind. What I wanted to say about it is that you seem like a small-minded, obnoxious, self-revering and vindictive human being for wanting to put someone in their “place” and mentioning that you could get the technician fired. Really? You’d go to the trouble to have someone fired for correcting your usage of a non-existent word? Pretty fucking petty, especially since you actually were wrong. It’s either “electronic” or “electrical” or “electric” … not “electronical”. If you are well educated enough to be an engineer, start acting like it and use the proper technical terms for your field of work, and if you want to be considered professional, you need to do not only that but also not threaten to beat someone down or get them fired for correcting a mistake you made. If anyone is an ass in this situation, it’s you.

So long as the debit card has a credit company logo on it, there is no way for the system to tell the difference. I have used my Visa debit card at places that don’t take debit cards and never, not once, had a problem with it going through. That’s the benefit of having the Visa logo … it makes my debit card into a credit card with a fixed limit (the amount in my bank account). But what I really want to say is that if you boss thinks that personal credit is immoral and therefore doesn’t want to accept credit cards, that’s his right as a business owner, but he better not expect to make great gains in the business world. It’s really none of his business to judge how people pay their bills or his right to expect everyone on the planet to live by what he thinks is moral or not. If he won’t take credit cards, they will just go somewhere else to do business. People can spend money unwisely (and potentially immorally) with a debit card, a check or cash just as easily as they can a credit card, and some people pay everything with a credit card and pay it off at the end of the month, because it’s easier than writing checks. Either convince your boss that he is fighting a losing battle or get a new boss. He sounds like a moralizing moron.
