Happy Birthday, Joey!

First off … HAPPY BIRTHDAY, JOEY!!! Hope you have a good one. Now I can call you old man for the next ten months until I catch up to you again. So now that you are 42, do you happen to know the Ultimate Question about Life, the Universe, and Everything?

I’ve been playing with my yarn stash today. The only thing I have on needles right now is that damn endless sweater and the Flying Spaghetti Monster hat (which is also beginning to feel endless). I want to make something else, because I am more than a little burnt out on both those projects. So out came my favorite yarns and needles. I came up with a few great combinations, but … what to make. To be honest, I am sick to death of scarfs, hats, gloves and even purses. I’m not interested in doing an afghan (no more endless projects, thank you very much) and none of the yarns I have right now are suitable for stuffed animals, not that I feel like doing any stuffed animals either. So I want to knit, I just don’t know what to knit. Bah humbug. Not knowing what to knit and wanting very badly to knit usually leads to yet another scarf. If I didn’t live in Texas, that probably wouldn’t be a problem. Even though I wear some of my scarfs year round, I do tend to get odd looks. We really only have about two months where scarfs are considered reasonable fashion accessories.

Other than playing with my yarn and watching some movies, I’m having the perfect lazy weekend. So is Lin. In fact, I’d say he’s managed to be even lazier than me. I am going to have to throw off this case of Spring Fever on Monday. Really … I have things to do, and there has been enough procrastination around here for a while.

But for now, I’m going to move back to the couch and play with my yarn some more. Since Lin is snoozing, I think I’ll pop in one of the movies I want to see (that he doesn’t). Maybe I’ll get to watch a whole movie before he wakes up and wants to use the TV.

Or maybe I’ll just take a nap too. Naps seem to be high on our list of Easter activities this year.

Sorry, I didn’t wake up yesterday with amazing insite on life, liberty or the pursuit of happiness. I am, however, at the age of 42 able to read at a 56 year old level…

    Thanks for remembering.

Socks!! Knit socks. They’re wonderful fun, useful, can be done in all kinds of bizarre and fun colours and patterns and they’re immanently portable. You can knit them on double pointed needles, 2 cirulars, a single circular with the “magic loop” method, or a very short circular needle. The options are also endless for patterns. Pick anything the fits for your gauge and stick it on the leg portion. Just knit and go.

Oh, and they’re very comfortable, too. Wool breathes, even in the TX heat.

I’ve done a few pairs of socks, but I need to learn to do them on a single circular. I love double-points, but I can only knit with them for a little while before my hands start hurting (I have joint problems). Lin said we could go buy me whatever yarn I want when he next gets paid, and some crazy and funky sock yarn might just be the thing. I’m so close to having that sweater done, but now that it’s hot again, I have zero desire to work on it. Socks may be the way to go to get my knitting fix this summer.

Have you tried bamboo dpns? I can’t use metal needles for very long at all without my hands giving me fits, but I can knit for ages on bamboo or ebony. Pity the ebony needles are a) really hard to find and b) mondo $$. Brittany birch needles aren’t too bad, but I love Crystal Palace.

Have you tried Knit Picks yet? They’ve got some pretty wacky yarn for not so much moola. Elann.com has some nice stuff, too.

If you’re feeling really froggy, you could always try some lace, but I’ll warn you. It is way addictive. :knit:

I have some bamboo dpns is larger sizes, which I haven’t even tried yet. I know I love my bamboo circular that I use to make scarfs on, so maybe I should pick up some sock size bamboos … when Lin isn’t looking. Some time back I finished out my needle set and bought an interchangable set and announced I was never going to have to buy needles again. Uh huh. Famous last words.

Knit Picks rocks. I drool on that web site regularly. I’ve been thinking of getting some of their dye-oyur-own fingering weight … because I totally dig the colors you can get with Kool-Aid (though I am certain everyone around me is sick to death of bright colored things).

And the lace bug bit me right away, about two months after I learned to knit. I just scored some wonderful mohair lace-weight in a soft beige, and it’s going to be well on its way to being something lacy as soon as I decide what pattern I want to try next. Lace IS addictive. The last lace scarf I did, I stayed up all night once by telling myself “Oh, I’ll just do one more repeat, and then I’ll go to bed” until the sun came up.
