Experimentation Two

Other than the time I spent eating pizza, watching Dr. Who and a George Carlin special, and bickering with Lin over something entirely stupid (I’m still right — nyah, nyah, nyah), I have been puttering in the kitchen most of the night experimenting with art supplies.

Have you ever wondered what would happen if you layered a sheet of wax paper and a towel on top of slightly damp acrylic paint on card stock and ironed it with a steam iron set on high? Well why haven’t you wondered that? I’m telling you, the answers to life’s biggest questions will be found in such ways.

Oh now you want to know what happens, don’t you?

The effect in a photo isn’t terribly impressive, so I am not going to waste the bandwidth. Basically, it flattens it, mushes it together in an interesting way, and gives it a waxy look and feel. Pretty cool really, and I will be experimenting with that idea further. I need to find the old and mostly broken iron, because if I mess up the new and shiny iron, Lin will want to strangle me. What can I say? I’m hard on irons. The funny thing is … I just about never iron clothing.

I had a great deal of success transferring images from National Geographic to liquid polymer clay, once I figured out how thick a layer to put on (not very thick at all). Even some of the mistakes turned out pretty cool.

Quasi Failure

On this one, I put way too much on, but still … I like it, and it’ll turn up on something somewhere. It has a real vintage, worn out and old look to it. I think I might try using some paint or markers to highlight the faint image a little. I’m afraid to do anything to it though, because I sort of like it the way it is.

Another Quasi Failure

This one is the regular printer paper with liquid polymer clay. If you rub off all the paper, you pretty much lose the image, so there’s still a very thin web of paper fibers holding that image to the polymer clay. Once again, not what I was shooting for, but it sure did turn out neat looking. Another mistake that’ll end up getting used somewhere.

Finally a Success

The only real success of the day! It’s a clipping from National Geographic with the polymer clay. This photo does not do it justice at all. The image is quite clear, and the colors, while a little faded are still intense. The whole thing has a slight gloss to it. Love this one. No idea what I am going to use it for, but into the box of Things to Stick on Things it goes. I’m sure to find something it wants to get stuck to eventually. :uhoh:

It’s late and I should go to bed. I’m not really sleepy, but I have no idea if Lin’s plans for tomorrow are going to include me at all, so I better clean up the kitchen and get at least a few hours of sleep. At some point, whether Lin is involved or not, grocery shopping must be done. Considering he drove Kenny all over God’s creation tonight running errands and doing shopping and laundry, I fully expect to be driven everywhere I go tomorrow. That’s something else I am right about (tnot the thing Lin and I were bickering about — though there is sure to be bickering tomorrow on this subject). :peoples:
