Want to prepare for the end of the world by stockpiling some food for a few months or even longer? Check out this Interactive Food Storage Calculator provided by the Latter-Day Saints.
Tomorrow I intend to inform Lin that he better get to work on that basement/bomb shelter, and he better make it BIG. The first page of my personal report suggests some 170 pounds of grains and pastas for a 3 month stockpile. I haven’t read any further than that, because at the moment, I don’t have room for 170 pounds of grains and pastas (or whatever other large quantities of other things they will suggest). I barely have room for a 5 pound bag of flour! :D
And did you hear that U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Michael Leavitt suggested that Americans stockpile canned tuna and powdered milk under their beds to prepare for an Avian Flu outbreak?
“When you go to the store and buy three cans of tuna fish, buy a fourth and put it under the bed,” Leavitt said. “When you go to the store to buy some milk, pick up a box of powdered milk, put it under the bed.”
Sort of sounds like the duct tape and plastic advice to me … which is about the equivalent of hiding under your school desk to escape an atomic bomb. Crazy talk, in other words. Besides, if all you are eating is canned tuna and powdered milk, you might as well let the flu kill you. Do you have any idea how much mercury there is in canned tuna? Eeew! What is it with our government and their totally stupid recommendations for survival gear?
