User Levels Etc.

Wish I had something interesting to say. Instead, I’ll just have to bore you with more site news. Sorry.
As you can see, things are looking a little more normal around here. The quickest thing to do in order to get rid of the default template was to fix the few things that weren’t working in WP 2.01. At least now I don’t cringe quite so badly when I look at my web site.
You may notice that the log in/register link is back at the top of every page. Registered users will probably have to log in. I don’t think the cookies are going to carry over from the other site/version. Anyway, if you have problems logging in and you KNOW you are registered, do let me know in the comments, and I’ll look into it.
In fact, if anything is acting strangely on the site or just not working, let me know in the comments, and I’ll look into it. ![]()
Also a quick word or so about user levels:
Though the user list seems to have imported without problems (so far), user levels did not … due to the way I had it all hacked together. User levels for reading private posts is now integrated into Wordpress, and basically I can have as many as ten different “trust levels”. I am thrilled about this. I doubt there will ever be as many as ten different user levels in use though, because really … who can keep track?! I was using only two before, and that’s probably about where it will stay, though there will probably be one higher level for those of you who have known me for ages and around whom I can safely completely loose my mind. ![]()
Registered users will start out at level 0. What’s going to get posted at that level is stuff I want to say mostly publicly but don’t want search engines to index for whatever reason. It also allows me to get a general idea of who is reading the posts.
The users I recognized by user name as being people who have commented on my site or emailed me or in some other way I have a more personal relationship with have already been moved to level 1. I might have missed a few, so no I didn’t snub you. I just didn’t immediately recognize you, and all you need to do is let me know. This applies mostly to people on my LJ Friends List, because they don’t all use the same user name at both places, and I am easily dumbfounded these days. Like I said, if you don’t see any restricted posts on the site right now and you used to, let me know. It was just an oversight.
The highest level I have set right now is 2. Those are people who I trust enough to let into my life in a little deeper and allow to see some of my more insane ranting and nervous breakdowns. These are the folks that actually know me and who I would call “friend” … people who I have developed a relationship with either out in the real world or on line over a period of time and who know me well enough to understand some of my particular mental foibles, are non-judgmental and whose advice I trust in most cases. It’s not a very large crowd. ![]()
There’s really only one rule about restricted posts and user levels: Don’t ask to get moved up to a higher one. The decision about what level someone is on and what they can read and comment on is entirely up to me. If you think you have been snubbed in some way, you can talk to me about it, but it’s not likely to change my mind unless it was an oversight on my part (and I expect those instances to be rare). I have reasons for filtering things the way I do, and I am not going to share those reasons with you.
OK, I think that sums up user levels. ![]()
Moving on … um … there isn’t anything else that’s all that new. Yet. There’s still a lot of work to do when I have the time and energy to do it, and at some point I am going to have to work on OrbiZart. I’m eager to get my art site up again. Too little time, too much to do. If you have any questions or suggestions, as always, I am glad to hear them. In the meantime, I have GOT to walk away from the computer. There’s this thing called “real life” that I have been seriously ignoring, and I better get back to it.
Right after I read the news …

Oh I’m logged back in! Yeah. Yesterday I couldn’t log in or register. It kept telling me I didn’t have access.
Hey! I dont get the error thingy at the status line of ie anymore. I’m sure you can fix that though.
Yup, no idea what happened. It was working, and then it wasn’t, and I did so much to the back end of the site yesterday that even my notes wouldn’t help.
I noticed the lack of an error in IE to when I was testing this morning. I wish I could take credit for it being gone, but yeah … who knows. I spent hours and hours trying to figure out what that dang error was, and I never did. You are correct though, I am sure that after a few weeks of getting all settled in and hacking around on things, I CAN bring back the little yellow whats-it.
The screen refreshes properly after posting a comment now! Whatever you did when switched was a good thing.
